Students today must enter the workforce with job-ready skill sets gained from applied experiences. Corporate connections and network savviness are essential to succeeding and thriving. Mentorship from seasoned professionals can be essential to choices benefitting students' career paths.
Adopt-a-Team, offered by the Cathy Hughes School of Communications at Howard University, provides leadership and professional development experiences for undergraduates through team- and project-based work with corporate partners. The field-based program prepares sophomore-, junior- and senior-level students for successful entry into the workforce.
Corporate partners select team members from a group of qualified student applicants. Team members may work on the following activities:
- Project execution
- Corporate or agency site visit
- Career fair event and hosting Power lunch and workshops
- Corporate Day (professional development, lectures and roundtable resume building)
- Interviews for internships Social, event and spot branding.

SiriusXM partnered with Cathy Hughes School of Communications with a year-long hands-on learning experiences for a cohort of students.
Projects
- Students help with content planning, execution, and artist engagement for “SiriusXM Presents: Closer to Hip-Hop Live” as a part of the newly launched Hip-Hop Studies minor.
- Students produce the podcast series “Sounds& Scholarship” with guidance from SiriusXM, featuring Howard University professors sharing their perspectives and expertise on hip-hop and the evolution of the genre; the show will be available via the SiriusXM app.
- SiriusXM leaders provide guest lectures in the hip-hop minor throughout the 2024-25 school year, including a class focused on hip-hop programming from SiriusXM’s VP, Music Programming, Josh “J1” Raiford.
- Students can opt-in to a SiriusXM mentorship program for assistance with professional development opportunities in the audio entertainment space and beyond.
- Visit SiriusXM’s headquarters in NYC for a day of immersive learning and networking.
