Why Howard Journalism?
We train multimedia storytellers who report with rigor, lead with integrity and speak truth to power. At Howard, you won’t just learn how to write, edit, or produce the news — you’ll learn how to tell stories that matter. You’ll cover communities that mainstream outlets overlook, ask the hard questions and create work that makes an impact.
Our alumni carry this legacy forward as Emmy Award–winning anchors, Pulitzer Prize–winning reporters, and NABJ award–winning editors. They lead in newsrooms at The New York Times, CNN, NPR, NBC, and more.
Our curriculum offers tracks in Digital and Broadcast Journalism, blending classroom rigor with real-world practice. For four consecutive years, our program has earned the National Academy of Arts & Sciences Student Production Award, better known as the Student Emmy, for Best Newscast, most recently in 2024. Students also sharpen their skills in Howard’s vibrant media ecosystem, including The Hilltop -- the nation’s oldest Black collegiate newspaper, Howard University News Service, WHUT-TV and WHUR-FM.
Through partnerships with major media organizations, including The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, NBC, CNN, Bloomberg and Report for America, our students secure competitive internships that launch their careers. Our faculty are award-winning journalists, authors, and industry leaders who bring decades of experience into the classroom.
The Center for Journalism and Democracy, based in our department, is the first of its kind hub for historically informed, pro-democracy journalism that strengthens both the profession and the public sphere.
At Howard Journalism, you’re not just preparing for a job -- you’re stepping into a legacy, joining a movement and building the future of the profession.
