Before joining Howard University’s Department of Media, Journalism and Film as an assistant professor, Mark Beckford was a web producer at Kaiser Health News, a homepage producer at the Washington Post on the universal news desk where he still works part-time. His recent research and journalism has explored media mergers in the Caribbean, Adverse Childhood Experiences in Baltimore and criminal justice in Ghana. Beckford’s roots in journalism started in 2006 at The Gleaner in Kingston, Jamaica, where he rose from the position of intern to become the Online Content Coordinator for several of The Gleaner’s websites until he left in 2013.
Research Interests
As a practicing journalist who now traverses in the field of academia, my main goal is to still tell the stories of those that aren’t told, documenting the rich tapestry of the human experience. My stories include looking at Adverse Childhood Experiences, Criminal Justice System reform in Ghana, the legacy of Josephine Baker in Paris, race relations and repatriation to Ghana, data privacy and media mergers in Jamaica and women’s football (soccer) in Nigeria.
