Tina Morton is a media activist, video oral historian, and Associate Professor at Howard University. Deeply committed to facilitating members of community groups in telling their own stories in their own voice, she has taught various organizations how to use media for social activism. Her award-winning works including, Severed Souls ©2001, Belly of The Basin ©2008, When We Came Up Here ©2016, and most recently Build Your Own Door ©2018, focuses on documenting the oral histories of families and underrepresented communities and have screened internationally.
She has received prestigious residencies and grants including the Leighton Artists’ Colony residency from the Banff Centre (Calgary, Canada), 18th Street Artist Residency in Santa Monica California, Leeway Transformation Award, and a Pew Fellowship in the Arts grant. Morton also has documented the protest surrounding the deaths of Michael Brown and Freddy Gray in Ferguson, MO and Baltimore, MD respectively. Professor Morton was the videographer and associate producer for Roxana Walker-Canton’s documentary, “Living Thinkers: An Autobiography of Black Women in the Ivory Tower.” This is a multiplatform project exploring the ecperiences of contemporary African American women working in American universities and colleges by documenting the education narratives of women across the country and across various academic disciplines and administrative positions.
