Course Overrides

Course overrides require the signature of the chair of the department where the course is offered.

Grades

Grading. Grade points are determined by multiplying the number of semester hours which a course yields by the grade point value of the grade received. The several grades yield grade points as follows: A=4 points, B=3 points, C=2 points, D=1 point, and F=0 points. The grade point average is determined by dividing the sum of attempted semester hours into the sum of the points. Courses taken at other accredited institutions—except those in the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area (see below) and in the Howard University Exchange Program—will not be used to calculate the overall grade point average.

Pass/Fail. Except for those courses specifically designated as “Pass/Fail” by the School of Communications, students may enroll on a Pass/Fail basis only with the prior written approval of their Department Chairperson and the Dean. Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors with a cumulative average of 2.0 or higher who enroll in at least 12 semester hours per semester may elect under the pass/fail arrangement, one additional course each semester in a department outside of their major and minor fields.

Dean’s List. The Dean’s List is published at the end of each semester and is comprised of all full-time students (with at least 12 credit hours) who earned at least a 3.2 average for that semester.

Honors at Commencement will be awarded as follows:

  • Cum laude: a 3.2 to 3.49 cumulative GPA.
  • Magna cum laude: a 3.5 to 3.79 cumulative GPA.
  • Summa cum laude: a 3.8 or better cumulative GPA.

Students are not eligible to graduate with honors if they have not carried at least 12 credits for each semester enrolled (with the exception of the last semester in residence) and they have not completed the last half of the work required for their degree in residence at Howard. Students who repeat a course do not graduate with honors.

Incomplete Grades

Incomplete grades may be assigned ONLY to students who, as a result of circumstances beyond their control (e.g., illness or family emergency) are unable to complete their coursework. Although the student initiates the request for an incomplete grade, the decision to assign an incomplete grade rests solely with the instructor. If the student’s request is approved, the instructor establishes and submits specific “make-up” conditions on an Incomplete Grade Processing Form (IGPF). Each incomplete designation (“I”) must be accompanied by an alternative grade (“B,” “C,” “D,” or “F”). The alternative grade will become the permanent grade, if the incomplete is not removed. Students have one semester to complete the assignments before the alternate grade becomes permanent (excluding summer sessions).

Retaking Courses

A student may repeat a course only once for which he/she has received a grade of D or F. In such cases a single grade—the lowest —with its attendant credit shall be discounted in the calculation of the student’s cumulative average. In the event of two identical grades, only one shall be discounted. All grades are recorded on the transcript.

NOTE: In all cases of course repeats the failing or previous grade is NOT expunged from the academic record.

Advising

Pre-requisites

Most of the upper level courses taught in the School of Communications require the prerequisite of a passing grade of C or better in a specific course. Students must complete all prerequisites before moving to the next level of course work. If students have not met the prerequisite with a C or better, professors can have the student dropped from the course during the first few weeks of class. Many professors ask students to bring in unofficial transcripts on the first days of class to demonstrate proof that a C or better was earned in the pre-requisite course(s).

Overrides

Students enrolled in the Howard University School of Communications who are seeking an override for a communications course, must obtain written authorization from the instructor, department chair and the special assistant to the Dean for student affairs. Note skills courses in the departments of Journalism and Radio, Television and Film have caps set on enrollment. No skills course can have more than 20 students enrolled, but typically the cap is 15 or fewer students.

Students seeking overrides for courses offered in a School/College/Division other than the HUSOC, must:

1. Obtain written authorization from the instructor(s) [Department Chairperson(s) responsible for the course(s).

2. Obtain signature of the Dean (or Associate/Assistant Dean or other designated official) of the School/College/Division in which the student is enrolled.

3. Submit the completed form during the appropriate period to the Academic Advisor in the School/College/Division responsible for course overrides
